Review of the Aboriginal Heritage Act 1988 Consultation For Heritage Industry Professionals and Academics A review of the current Aboriginal Heritage Act began in 2008, and early consultation indicated widespread support for a new, updated approach to protecting Aboriginal heritage that is clearer for everyone affected, but also provides more flexibility. As a result, a draft of the Aboriginal Heritage Bill 2013 has been prepared, Aboriginal Affairs and Reconciliation Division, Department of Premier and Cabinet have been instructed to conduct consultations with a number of key stakeholders regarding the draft Bill. The consultations are conducted in two phases, the first is a confidential phase with a series of key organisations, and the second is a public consultation period where the document is publically released and broad consultation can be conducted. The first confidential phase of the consultation has been extended, delaying the public release of the document. Once the second public phase of broader consultation is announced, Aboriginal Affairs and Reconciliation Division will announce a consultation date for the Heritage Industry Professionals and Academics, and ensure that the information is sent to the various networks and contacts to ensure the voice of this key stakeholder group is heard.
