Review on Miss World Philippines 2013 (Part 1) by JP Anonuevo In an end to a somewhat ho-hum production amidst the stormy weather in Metro Manila, a gorgeous lady representing Olongapo won the coveted title of Miss World Philippines 2013. Megan Lynne Young bested 24 other candidates in the third edition of the pageant (it was under the Binibining Pilipinas pageant from 1992 to 2010) and won the right to represent the country at the 2013 Miss World Pageant in Indonesia. The road to her crown was a rather predictable one as pageant enthusiasts have been waiting for her to join a major pageant for some years now. It was said that she was to join Bb. Pilipinas 2012 but backed out last minute from being screened. She continued her showbiz (being an actress at that time in ABS-CBN) and modeling career. Earlier this year she would screen again for Bb. Pilipinas but was denied of such because of her previous modeling job for Rogue Magazine (it was forbidden in the rules of BPCI for a candidate to have posed topless or in a men’s magazine). Pageant fans were sad, thinking that this would be the last and that the possibility of her joining (and winning—as they all have predicted) would never come to surface. Much was the joy when finally Megan did screen for Miss World Philippines. She was in fighting form, and that he joining was the most anticipated for this year. She did not prove everyone wrong as she went head to head with the fiercest and toughest pageant competitors. The Veterans and Return of the Comeback This pageant also saw the battle of pageant veterans and a returning MWP Princess hoping to get a shot at the crown: Ma. Paula Bianca Paz – Miss World Philippines 2011 3rd Princess; Bb. Pilipinas 2009 candidate Patricia Lae Ejercitado – Bb. Pilipinas 2012 semifinalist; Bb. Pilipinas 2010 candidate Zandra Flores – Mutya ng Pilipinas 2013 candidate; Bb. Pilipinas 2013 candidate; Miss Philippines Earth 2012 candidate (IMHO, the Crossover Queen of 2013 having competed in all major pageants in the country—Ed.) Ria Rabajante – Bb. Pilipinas 2013 candidate Mercegrace Raquel – Bb. Pilipinas 2013 candidate Janicel Lubina – 2012 Miss Scuba Philippines winner; 2013 Miss Bikini Philippines winner KC Cajandig – Bb. Pilipinas 2013 candidate In totality, MWP 2013 was hotly contested. Add the fact that there were fresh candidates that could pull an upset like Jennifer Hammond, Zarah Saldua, and Samantha Bernardo. And the “Hakot” Award Goes To… The Filipino term "Hakot" means to gather. Any pageant in the Philippines will not be complete without special awards. This is, as pageant pundit claim, a good indication who will win the pageant (which is why Megan Young seems to be the predictable winner). Here are the Special Awardees: Best In Long Gown -Ma. Paula Bianca Paz (No.19) Best In Swimwear - Janicel Lubina (No.10) Best in Fashion Runway - Megan Lynne Young (No.20) Miss Sports by Fila - Megan Lynne Young (No.20) Miss Photogenic - Janicel Lubina (No.10) Miss Friendship - Zahra Bianca Saldua (No.5) Best in Talent - Samantha Mae Bernardo (No.7) Miss World Laguna - Megan Lynne Young (No.20) Miss World Traveller - Janicel Lubina (No.10) Heart of Miss World Philippines Award - Karla Patricia Alas (No.6) and Ma. Paula Bianca Paz (No.19) Miss Bold and Glamorous by Revlon - Megan Lynne Young (No.20) Miss Prudential Life - Patricia Lae Ejercitado (No.22) Miss Novu Hair - Patricia Lae Ejercitado (No.22) Miss RedoxFat - Ma. Paula Bianca Paz (No.19) Miss Olay - Megan Lynne Young (No.20) Miss Pantene - Zahra Bianca Saldua (No.5) Miss Bench Body - Megan Lynne Young (No.20) Miss “Tilaok” Tilaok is a Filipino term for how the rooster sounds in the morning. In other words, this is a pageant that actually dragged on till late at night to somewhat early morning. Pageant TV watchers claimed the televised show ended somewhere before 2 am. For us watching it live at the grand ballroom of Solaire Resort and Casino, it ended just before the stroke of midnight (which is still late, by pageant standards).. Blame it to the fact that the pageant started late. The invitation mentioned that the pageant was 6 pm. The actual show started at 8:30 pm. One could just imagine the people outside the ballroom waiting for the doors to open. When we scooped for info, we were told that some parts of the show was being taped, which is why the doors weren’t being opened yet. Wow. It was funny how the schedule was a bit confusing—6 pm in the invite; 7 pm in the poster that Solaire created just outside the ballroom, and 8:30 pm when the actual show started. We do have lives you know…add the fact that it was stormy with Metro Manila under red alert. The least you could have done is start on time so that we all could go back to check on the safety of our loved ones. My Husband’s Lover in the House! The pageant seemed like another event for GMA 7’s series My Husband’s Lover. Dennis Trillo (who plays Eric) was a judge. Carla Abellana (who plays Lally) and Victor Basa (who plays David) were hosts. Kuh Ledesma (who plays Elaine) and Tom Rodriguez (who plays Vincent) were guest performers. Not to mention the fact that the series theme song (One More Try of Kuh Ledesma) was sung. It’s Showtime! After much waiting, the pageant started with a rousing opening number featuring the candidates and the reigning MWP Queenie Rehman. Props to Queenie for her singing. Props to Arnold Galang for creating such wonderful dresses for the opening number. The opening production number was energetic. In fact, it was more energetic than the audience. Lesson that should be learned by the MWP peeps. Make your pageant open to the public (with ticket sales). In that way, you can be raising funds for your charitable programs, and you can lure the people who actually LOVE pageants to watch. It’s kind of sad how MWP started at such a high note (PICC Plenary Hall) and then went down to a hotel ballroom to hold its coronation night. Singer Kris Lawrence came onstage and sang some songs. He’s a really nice singer and a good performer. It just surprised me when he said it was his first time singing in Miss World Philippines. Sorry, dude, but if my memory serves me right, you also sang in the 2011th edition. (Up next...Swimsuits and Evening Gowns)
