Rhode Island to honor “Blue Star Parents” STATE HOUSE – The governor has signed legislation passed by the General Assembly, declaring the first Sunday after Mother’s Day each year as “Rhode Island Blue Star Parents Day.” Legislation calling for the annual observance (2014-H 8183, 2014-S 2978) was introduced by Rep. Scott J. Guthrie (D-Dist. 28, Coventry) and Sen. Erin P. Lynch (D-Dist. 31, Warwick, Cranston). Blue Star Families was formed in April 2009 by a group of military spouses to raise the awareness of the challenges of military family life. Blue Star Families includes spouses and families from all services and all walks of life, including National Guard and Reserve. The legislation urges the residents of the state to observe the day with appropriate exercises in public places to “celebrate the many contributions of Blue Star Parents have and continue to make in our state.”
