Rhododendron is a genus that includes both azaleas and what is commonly called “rhododendron.” The common name of rhododendron is usually reserved for those species with thick evergreen leaves. In Georgia that includes Rhododendron catawbiense, Rhododendron maximum and Rhododendron minus. These are mostly in the northern half of the state, although R. minus has some Coastal Plain presence according to USDA. These beautiful evergreen shrubs usually bloom in May-June in a range of white to pink colors. Shown are R. maximum and R. minus.
