Rich Kulawiec, not exactly known for being a soft voice on the Internets, on the recent spate of challenges to government spying requests by large US Internet companies: listbox/member/archive/247/2013/09/sort/time_rev/page/1/entry/0:98/20130912131017:2F590256-1BCE-11E3-834A-DE27DE7B4AD4/ Mayer et.al. could have blown the whistle on this nonsense with near-impunity a long time ago. As Opsahl observes: "Revealing classified information or disobeying an order from the FISA Court would most likely fall under the espionage act, Opsahl said. They could be found in contempt of court and there would be a fine, but the penalties would probably be directed at the company, not the executives." They could have walked away with a wrist-slap, barely sacrificing anything at all -- not sleeping in an airport lounge on the other side of the world, hunted, denounced, and effectively exiled.
