Riders Gunthwaite, Penistone, Ingbirchworth, Cawthorne, Upper - TopicsExpress

Riders Gunthwaite, Penistone, Ingbirchworth, Cawthorne, Upper Denby areas. Can you help Rachel Platt, create more voice behind these concerns? Letter to the Bridleways Officer at Barnsley. I am determined to follow this through as far as possible to try and enforce them to take some responsibility/actions for the points I raise in my letter, so any thoughts and names of like minded riders/walkers, would be another string to the bow I think. ------I have lived and ridden around the Bridleways of Penistone for 16 years and although we have some well maintained sections - the obvious being the trail, I am becoming more and more frustrated with the neglect of some of the smaller routes. Please could I draw your attention to some that I am now no longer able use, and why? I must just say I have finally decided to write and pursue these issues, as it has become ridiculous how may impassible routes there are for riders. These are not an exaggeration I can assure you-you must go and see the issues for yourself. *Coach Gate Lane and North Lane Gunthwaite/Cawthorne/Hoylandswaine district: this is a delightful Bridleways that myself and fellow riders on the 3 livery yards at Gunthwaite can no longer access, as the top section behind the collection of houses on North Lane, is far too narrow with overgrown hedging, and incredibly deep in leaf mould/mud, due to the overgrowth. My horse ended up sinking 8-10 inches deep trudging through the section; My horse had a shoe semi pulled off requiring my husband to come and rescue me in a horse box as I couldnt remove the shoe. The area needs clearing and a sustainable surface putting down to eradicate this issue. I must at this point stipulate that this is not an Autumn/Winter issue, this Bridleway is a quagmire throughout the summer too as it receives no sunlight with which to enable it to dry out. *It is exactly the same with the Bridleway off the A635 Lane Head Road near the bottom of Coach Gate Lane, Gunthwaite, and New Road at Cannon Hall. The middle section of this just after the farmhouse on the A635 is impassable due to overgrown hedges/mud etc. This Bridleway is further problematic due to the poor upkeep of the 3 gates on its route (and an exceptionally aggressive dog at the farmhouse at the end of the Bridleways at Cannon Hall. It is tethered but launches itself at you as you pass). *Bank Lane from B6115 at Upper Denby to the A635 Barnsley Road at Denby Dale. The cobbles on this route are lethal for horse shoes whether you take it up or downhill. Several have had accidents on this route, the worst case being a horribly injured horse who fell and burst both his knees. *A629 Huddersfield Rd at Ingbirchworth to the B6115 at Upper Denby. This route is beautiful but almost impossible for horse riders, due to the number of gates, some entirely unnecessary, and their poor upkeep. The most dangerous section of the route is at the bottom of the dip over the little stream where there is a bridge of slippy planks, barely wide enough for a horse to pass over, and a gate immediately after the bridge. There is just no way you can get off your horse to open the rickety gate safely without there being the obvious dangers to you and your horse. So, in the direct location that I stable my horse alongside several others at Burncotte Livery, we have 2 passable Bridleways out of 6. There are 4 livery yards in the Upper Denby/Gunthwaite location. Obviously I have included a quote from your website with regard to my issues that clearly states your obligation to us as residents, and I would appreciate your thoughts on the matter. Many thanks, Rachel Platt
