Ridley Scotts The Counselor feels like a Joe Eszterhas script that Paul Verhoeven passed up directing in the Nineties. At times Cormac McCarthy is cannibalizing his other work and George V. Higgins. Cameron Diaz gives a speech at the end that channels Jackie Cogan, Ed Tom Bell and Sarah Palin. Ridley Scott is trying to copy his late brother, Tony throughout the film. Twenty years ago, I took Robert McKees Screenwriting seminar, I am sure he would have loved McCarthys first script! Speaking of Jackie Cogan, I really kind of wish Brad Pitt to break into that character. He, like the rest of cast, is sadly wasted here!
