Right! Six shows that have made an impact on me and the reasons why. 1. The Taming of the Shrew at Stratford in 1960. This was the beginning of my lifelong love affair with theatre in general and Shakespeare in particular! 2. US, RSC in the 60s, a play about the horrors of war, particularly Vietnam. At the end an actor burned a butterfly which horrified the audience more than the thought of all the appalling human deaths. 3. Of Mice and Men, Watermill 2013 I think. It was brilliantly performed and utterly stunning. I had never read the book and at the end I couldnt move, I just sat there with tears running down my cheeks. 4. La Cage aux Folles which I saw at least seven times, outstanding acting especially from Douglas Hodge who portrayed the aging drag queen brilliantly. And the wonderful Cagelles who thrilled and terrified in equal measure. Entertaining but also a brilliant portrayal of a gay relationship, funny, heartbreaking and tender. 5. Propellers A Midsummer Nights Dream around 2004, my first Propeller production and one which changed the way I saw Shakespeare for ever. Because of this amazing company I have travelled to places I might never have visited, made new friends and become an aging groupy! It enriched my life in so many ways. 6. Pride at the Trafalgar Studios in 2013 I think! Brilliantly written and performed with amazing courage and sensitivity. The rape scene reduced the audience to a silence Ive never heard before in the theatre. Another play which made me cry and rendered me incapable of speech. Its no good, I have to have a seventh and risk embarrassing Steve Burbridge, but I have to include 7. Testing Times as I felt privileged to be there meeting the writer/director/producer and cast of another amazing play which made me both laugh and cry and deserves a wider audience!! I nominate Damien Bishop, Hannah Rogers, Peter Griffiths, Adam Holman, Ben Holman and Jessica Holman to give us their six now, or even seven!!!!
