Right is right, even if nobody does it. Wrong is wrong, even if everybody is wrong about it. G. K. Chesterson There is an inscription on the walls of the Catacombs that reads, “The just man is himself his own law.” This essentially means that the man of character sets his own rules about right and wrong. If he knows something is right, he will act on it, even if nobody else agrees with his assessment of the situation. Likewise, if he knows something is wrong, he refrains from doing it and stands against it, even if all others claim that he is mistaken in his point of view. It takes a lot of courage to go against the views of the majority, but that is exactly what the warrior has to do in order to live up to the standards which he sets for himself. The majority is often wrong. Baltasar Gracian said that, “The stupid make up the majority,” and “Fools all who seem it, and the half of those who do not.” You must decide for yourself what is right and what is wrong. Don’t gauge the validity of anything by the majority’s opinions on the subject. A warrior must be clear about his own beliefs. He must know what he believes and why he believes it, in order to have the conviction that it takes to stand alone for justice. How can you be motivated enough to stand alone against injustice if you aren’t 100% sure about what is right and what is wrong? You must be able to recognize injustice when you see it in order to stand for justice. Always do what is right, even if nobody else does.
