Rise in Global Temperature As per the Second National Communication submitted to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in May, 2012, India’s annual mean temperature showed significant warming trends of 0.560C per 100 years during the period 1901-2007. As per the report, mean temperature has increased by about 0.2 0C per decade for the period 1971-2007. This was stated by Shrimati Jayanthi Natarajan Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Environment and Forests, in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha today. International Energy Agency in its report titled “Understanding Energy Challenges in India” published in 2012 reported that India had the third largest energy demand in the world in 2009 and the demand will continue to grow at 3.1% from 2009-2035. The largest demand would come from coal, the Minister added.
