River Frome: So this is 1828, before the alterations and culverting; the northern channel is the natural river, upper right, from Wade Street to Union Street, upper left, albeit reduced in width by 50% over the previous 700 years. Everything else was dug out by the Norman castle builders between roughly 1100 and 1150 AD. The Mill tail also comes off at Wade Street, upper right, and meets the moat at the broadweir, where an arm goes along Broadweir, under the foot of Newgate and through the Castle Mill sluices, where it rejoins the natural channel west of Merchant St. The moat also goes over the Broadweir and out to the Avon at Queen Street. This is the bit you can canoe today. And lastly, you have the narrow weir overflow flood channel under todays H&M, Cabot Circus, another weir connecting the mill tail with the natural channel. The watering place for the city horses is just west of Castlemead.
