Road Construction UPDATES as of 6-21-13 US 51, Front Street to Old Hwy 70, Minocqua Roadway construction • WPS is installing new light poles in Stage 1. Installation of some of the lights may take place the week of June 24 pending delivery of materials from the manufacturer to WPS. • Grading crews prepared Huber Lane and Rogers Drive for asphalt paving. Crews plan to continue preparing driveways for asphalt paving. These operations are dependent on favorable weather conditions and construction status. • Crews continued pouring the red, decorative concrete terrace. Construction of the new sidewalk and terrace areas is expected to continue through June. Crews will continue to communicate with the business owners regarding access to their properties as the new sidewalk is placed. • IMPORTANT: The public is asked to avoid the new sidewalks until they have sufficiently dried. The white curing compound from the new concrete will stick to anything that touches it. Drying times could take as much as a week or more. • Retaining wall work along the project continues. The contractor will also continue topsoil placement, final grading, and seeding behind areas of completed sidewalk. • Electricians performed work at the HAWK pedestrian crossing and plan to erect the overhead poles and arms the week of June 24. At this point, it is anticipated that the HAWK will be fully operational later this summer. • Asphalt paving of US 51, which will consist of a total of 6 inches of hot mix asphalt, will be constructed in three layers. The first two layers in all lanes have been placed. The final surface layer of asphalt is scheduled to be placed starting the week of June 17 and finishing the week of June 24. The contractor continued paving some of the parking lot and driveway areas and plans to continue that work the week of June 24. The paving schedule is dependent on favorable weather conditions and construction status. Milling off and replacement of the old asphalt near Torpy Park has been rescheduled to take place in Stage 2 of this project (September – November). • Depending on favorable weather conditions pavement marking and roadway signage is scheduled for completion the week of June 24. Traffic • The highway is reduced to one lane in each direction between Front Street and Island Cove Drive. As work progresses, motorists should be aware that frequent shifting of open traffic lanes may be necessary to accommodate work operations. • Crews plan to maintain at least one lane of traffic in each direction for the majority of the project. At times, traffic may be reduced to a single lane with flagging operations. • Motorists may encounter delays and are reminded to use caution when traveling through the work zone. • All sidewalks within the project limits are closed and are signed as such. Pedestrians and others that typically use these routes should consider other alternatives. • Lakeview Drive is permanently closed to vehicular traffic at US 51. However, pedestrian access from the new sidewalk along US 51 to Lakeview Drive will be constructed as part of this project. Next public meeting • The next construction information meeting is scheduled for Thursday, June 27 at the Minocqua Town Hall at 7:30 a.m. For more information, contact: Kristin McHugh, WisDOT Region Communications Manager (715) 421-8380
