Road widening: 2,003 trees will be saved TNN Bangalore: The Karnataka State Highways Improvement Project (KSHIP),which is undertaking a road-widening project in Tumkur, informed the high court that 2,003 out of 4,153 trees will be saved from the axe after the re-adjustment /realignment plan. Counsel for the agency told a division bench headed by Chief Justice DH Waghela that only 2,150 trees are to be cut now and applications will be submitted before the tree officer concerned seeking permission. The bench then adjourned the hearing by two weeks asking the government to submit orders to be passed by the tree officer on those applications. On June 4,2013 the court permitted the contractors to undertake civil works. Last year,GT Arun Kumar,a citizen, had written to the chief justice complaining that 4,153 trees were being felled for the Gubbi-Maddur road-widening project, calling the move unwarranted as there was no prior study on the feasibility of the project. The court had treated the letter as suo motu PIL and stayed tree-felling in June last year.
