Robert Spencer does not explain why so many people in the Middle East believe this even though the US is attacking the IS, but Ill tell you: They think it is because the IS has exceeded its mandate from its primary sponsor hiding behind the scenes, Israel, and must now be disciplined by military force. The Iranian press has said this many times; they see it as part of a larger pattern, where the US creates a nasty organization, then turns against it after its purpose has been served. Al-Qaeda is sometimes cited as an example of this. They think the US plans these creations and betrayals from the beginning so it will have an excuse to intervene in the region militarily. That way, the US is always the bad guy and the problem is never due to some supremacist ideology for world domination originating in some local religion. At the same time, Iran can say the IS is a mercenary body that has been deluded by heartless imperialists into betraying the good name of Islam.
