Robin Williams Honored On Broadway With Show-Stopping Tribute By Cast Of Aladdin. Broadway dimmed its lights on Wednesday in honor of actor and comedian Robin Williams, who died Monday in an apparent suicide. But one show-stopping tribute took place on Tuesday night inside the New Amsterdam Theatre. James Monroe Iglehart, who won a Tony Award this year for his portrayal of Genie, led the cast of Aladdin as well as the audience in a rousing singalong of Friend Like Me. Williams voiced the role of the scene-stealing Genie in the 1992 Disney animated feature, turning the character into a master impersonator and helping the film to become the years highest-grossing movie. While Williams was not a regular on the Great White Way, he did star in the 2011 production of Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo. He also appeared in a one-man show on Broadway in 2002 and performed with Steve Martin off-Broadway in Waiting for Godot at Lincoln Center in 1988. Via Huffpost.
