Robin Williams told the truth. Always. And the truth is he was hurting, and he told us that, and he invited us to hurt with him and laugh at ourselves , hurting, with each other, with him, at each other, at him....and I really believe thats what comedy is; commiseration and joyful irreverence for the human condition. Its why the folks that have the realest lives with the most intense struggles still smile and laugh as easily as as child, because they know that pain is temporary and can be malleable, used to relate to any situation, and the reality of pain is what we all have in common. Its also why many of us with this gift are often seen as impervious to pain. Just because we try to shape it into something to bring joy, doesnt mean we dont struggle, every day, with a certain amount of isolation because of our gifts. Sometimes that isolation and confusion traps our spirits, we stop seeing what others see in us, because we start listening to the critic inside that feeds us poison. If you have a funny person in your life, hug them often, ask them how they REALLY are, invite them to be all the ways that they are around you, without judgement, and let them know how grateful you are that they know how to tell the truth in a way that makes you think and feel and laugh. If you ARE a funny person, please allow yourself to be hugged often, to ask for help, to be vulnerable, disclose those feelings more often, and trust that all of you, not just the funny, all the sides of you are just as important to the people that love your humor, and your gifts are worldly, they are not selfish, use them to connect, and rejoice in the fact that we hurt and laugh as one. I pray he found the peace he could not find here in this lifetime. The world is going to celebrate his life together, so he left us a bit more peaceful and united in his wake. What an honor to have lived during his lifetime.
