Robin Williams tragic death, apparently by suicide, isnt any more tragic because of his supreme comedic gifts, it amplifies a critical issue in America. There are 19 million Americans who grapple with depression every day. It is a paralyzing, heartbreaking illness and very, very REAL. Although about 70% of individuals with depression have a full remission of the disorder with effective treatment, fewer than half of those suffering from this illness seek treatment. Too many people resist treatment because they believe depression isnt serious, that they can treat it themselves or that it is a personal weakness rather than a serious medical illness.Robin Williams was beloved the world over, had fame and fortune and a million friends,yet he apparently took his own life because he couldnt overcome depression.That in itself should tell you just how powerful and deadly this disorder truly is. All of that said, we will miss the greatest improvisational clown in this generation. The already sad world got a little sadder today.
