Roger Federer : SEE YOU NEXT YEAR... said Roger Federer! After playing an incredible Wimbledon Final with Novak Djokovich... a 5 setter that set me thinking of some of the great 5 setter finals we have known since our teens. Newcombe vs. Rosewall; Borg vs. MacEnroe; Becker vs. Edberg; Federer vs. Nadal; and this match... a test of stamina, skill and determination not to give up.There have been extraordinary players and magnificient feats at wimbledon.Nastase, Tanner,Connors,Lendl, Pete Sampras and before him Jim Courier. Our own Vijay Amritraj has played some great 5 setters but never went beyond the Last Eight. But this evenings match!! This one is the equivalent of a Greek Epic. The Character, the insights, the strategies, that decision to make that extra effort, . Though we know that Federer wanted to win this elusive 19th Title, and Djokovich wanted to stamp his undoubted impress on this years tennis by winning over the best player that tennis has yet produced.... THERE WAS a sense in which they would have been quite content to test each other indefinitely... just holding on for the sheer delight of a contest. In another era, without the tie-breaks, wed probably still be watching the 3rd or 4th set. I half expected Federer to announce his retirement....win or lose. But he said... yes he did... see you next year. Djokovich is an excellent winner and champion. But Federer might just play out a couple of years, let Nadal and Djokovich retire or begin to lose to others... and then win his elusive 19th Grandslam,at Wimbledon. He has the consuming passion for the game. Todays match proved it beyond doubt.. Hell play at 40. Hell play at 50. and give us a taste of what it is to dig deep into ones stamina and play on.
