Romare Bearden is an example of Black Excellence! He was born in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1911. He was an incredible artist who was interested in music, history, performing arts, literature and world art. In 1964, he was appointed the first art director of the Harlem Cultural Council, a prominent African-American advocacy group. He was involved in founding several important art venues, such as The Studio Museum in Harlem and the Cinque Gallery. Bearden and the artists Norman Lewis and Ernest Crichlow established Cinque to support younger African American artists. Before he was a famous artist, Romare was also a talented baseball player. He was recruited by the Philadelphia Athletics on the condition that he would agree to pass for white. He refused and pursued his art. He died in March 1988. The world is a better place because of the talents and art of Romare Bearden.
