Ron Massey Cup Match Report Mounties v Asquith Sunday 14th July 2013 Storey Park Asquith Mounties and Asquith have played out a thrilling 30 all draw in round 15 of the Ron Massey Cup in a bruising encounter which left both teams spent at the end of play. Asquith got off to a dream start scoring two converted tries in the first 15 minutes of play to lead 12-0 and leave Mounties to lament some missed opportunities and the early loss of centre Francis Vaiotu with a season ending knee injury. To their credit Mounties regrouped and in the 22nd minute Nick Kassis continued his golden form from the early part of the game to open the scoring for Mounties when he ran a nice unders line to coast over untouched and make it 12-6 in favour of the home team. From the kickoff Mounties immediately went on the attack and on the fourth tackle Vinnie Uelese crashed over to make it 12-12 before Tim Tautuaa finished off a nice backline movement just three minutes later to put Mounties in front 18-12 after Uiti Baker left a trail of destruction with one of his trade mark runs. The game then became an a classic arm wrestle with both teams not giving anything away and the score remained 18-12 up to half time. Immediately after the break Mounties chanced their hand and ran the ball on the last tackle with Nick Kassis finishing off the play with his second try and Mounties lead extended to 24-12 however it wasn’t long before Asquith got a try back and trailed 24-18. In the 60th minute an intercept by Asquith on their try line saw them race the length of the field to level the scores 24-24 and not long after the home team looked to get their nose in front when a nice play saw Jack Le Hang stroll through a yawning gap however he inexplicably ran over the dead ball line before putting the ball down and Mounties were given a 20 metre tap. In the 64th minute a knee injury to Mounties captain Mitch Cahalane which saw him leave the field was followed up by a mistake and Asquith were able to take the lead when they crashed over to make it 28-24 and with the clock ticking Mounties needed to make something happen. That came in the 69th minute when Louis Vaiotu and Grant Lahey combined to put David Farkas away under the posts and Mounties regained the lead 30-28. Both teams then jockeyed for field position and in the 79th minute Asquith were awarded the only two penalties of the second half which saw them march down field on the first and line up a conversion in front on the second to snatch the draw. The game proved costly for Mounties with Francis Vaiotu likely to miss the remainder of the season, Mitch Cahalane will be out for 6-8 weeks and they will be joined by Wayne Dargan (season), Tunui Maurangi 4-6 weeks and Brandon Bonnici (Neck 6-8 weeks) as casualties. In the True Blue Chemicals Sydney Shield Mounties were dominant in both halves having led 20-12 at half time with 12 men after having players placed in the sin bin however they were able to overcome that and a lopsided penalty count against them to run away with the second half, recording a 46-16 victory with Billy King scoring three tries and Fred Pakatoa capping off a great game with two tries.
