Ron Paul is wrong and there is no American empire. The United States did not keep the oil wealth or land of Iraq or Kuwait. America is not taking anything from the desperately poor people of Afghanistan. The only thing we wanted in the former Yugoslavia was the end of genocide, ethnic cleansing and rape camps. Our armed forces have truly been the peacemakers, not empire builders. We are not a police state or a “warfare state.” The U.S. military has kept people safe and maintained our prosperity. We use our power to keep peace rather than to rule, and it would be wrong to return to isolationism.
