Ron Washingtons resignation as manager of the Texas Rangers comes as the team widens its lead on other teams as the one with the worst record in major league baseball. With 22 games to play in the regular season, the Rangers are 53-87, and thats now a full eight games behind the Houston Astros in the AL West. Or, put another way, the Rangers are eight games AHEAD of the Astros in the race for last place, which comes with the first pick in the draft. However, for all you Yankees fans out there, the pinstripes arent doing all that well themselves, and have to win at least four of their last 24 games to assure finishing above Texas. The Yankees are 72-66, and the Rangers will actually finish above New York if Texas can win all remaining 22 games to finish 75-87 while the Yankees finish 2-22 from here on in to wind up with a 74-88 record. I think if you go to Las Vegas and suggest a wager like that, you can become wealthy very quickly. Let me know how that works out, OK? Texas has lost six straight games and is 53-87 for the worst record. Closest to the Rangers is the Colorado Rockies, three games behind at 56-84; followed by the Arizona Diamondbacks, six games back at 59-81. Then come the Astros and two other teams -- Minnesota and Boston -- who are eight games behind the Rangers at 61-79. In the race for the worst record and the No. 1 draft pick, the Yankees are a full 20 games behind the Rangers going into the last 3-1/2 weeks of the season. However, the Yankees also are eight games behind Baltimore in the AL East and have little hope of making the playoffs this season.
