Round 5 Result 1st XI vs Foster – won by 112 runs. With the first of our scheduled two-day games reverted to a One-day contest after heavy rain in the first week, the A’s were looking to get back on the winners board and didn’t disappoint with a solid team effort. Winning the toss and electing to bat on a heavy, dead track, there was an early blip on the radar as opener Neville Toms was dismissed early for 3, but from here young Ben Perry joined with Sammy Hughes to help stead the ship. Both batsmen looked composed and controlled and set about building the score until Perry was dismissed with the only false shot of his innings for 18. Bernie Pedlow joined Hughes and together the two added 128 for the 3rd wicket to take the score along to 3-184 when Hughes was dismissed for 77, trying to push the run-rate along after a patient and calculated innings. With his little fella in the sheds watching on, Bernie demonstrated what dad can do as he continued the run-flow and once up and running was spectacular to watch, cutting a swathe through the opposition for a calypso 84. Sammy Sperling (16 not out) and Joey Nichols (4 not out) rounded out the final overs and at the end of our 40 overs we’d rattled up a handy 4-233. Nourished by a delectable afternoon tea, we hit the field looking for wickets, but were forced to wait as loose lines and controlled batting called for something special to snare the first wicket. Pops Toms didn’t disappoint as he snared a ripping one-handed blinded to transform an unassuming Sammy Sperling delivery into a wicket-taking delivery. Sperling bowled well in his 8 overs claiming 2-17, whilst Benny Perry (1-27 off 8) probed away at the other end to also get amongst the action. With the run-rate slowed and victory assured, it gave Pauly Stow the opportunity to try his hand at his secret off-spin and he didn’t disappoint as he darted his way to 2-12 and a brown jacket nomination off 5 overs. Spin twin Daniel Baker joined him at the other end, and his debut A grade bowling performance also saluted the scorebook as he managed to snare 1-13 off 4 overs. Both Bakes and Stowman’s dismissals were their first A grade wickets – well done lads! At stumps we had secured a comfortable victory with Foster only managing 7-121 off 4 overs. Well done boys – we now look to Killy Bass next week. 2nd XI vs Korumburra @ Koonwarra – won by 7 wickets. As with the A’s, the B’s had a good win in a game that was reduced to a One-Day contest due to wet weather. Winning the toss and sending the Cobras in to bat on a heavy, slow track, the Cougar lads bowled well, snaring regular wicket to not allow the opposition to build a large total. Omar Sherriff was the first to get the ball rolling as he managed to shot-put a classic run-out with the score reading just 7 on the board. It was to be an omen as Omar went on to star with both the bat and ball throughout the innings. Nick Arnup was the next to get amongst the action and would ultimately go on to snare 2 wicket with the tidy figures of 2-26 off his 8 overs. With the Cobras looking to settle and rebuild their innings, it was Sherriff (2-28 off 8) who next led the charge snaring a couple of wickets to go with his run-out to see the visitors in a precarious position of 4-86. In a momentous occasion, Lachie Moore in his first game for the Cougars and united with his brother Nick and father Brett for the first time on the cricket field bowled tidily without luck as too did Paris Buckley, but it was Stevie Anderson (2-40 off 7) who picked up a couple of late wickets as he so often does to help reduce Korumburra to 7-152. Chasing a gettable, but tough score on a slow ground, Brett Moore looked to be up and running as he moved along to 16 before offering the opposition a chance. From here Omar Sherriff joined Leo Enter and together the two pushed the score along to 91 before Omar fell with the half century in sight on 45. It was to be a decisive knock and capped a great day for the Pontiff of Pizza as he led the way in all aspects of the game. It was a double blow as Leo Enter was also dismissed shortly after a fine opening innings of 25, but his dismissal left the team in a tough spot at 3-95 Nicko Arnup picked up the challenge and combined with the in-form Nugget Grimes, cautiously picked of the runs until Grimes brought up the victory with 6 in the second last over. Both men saw out the last over and remained undefeated with Arnup 30* and Grimes* as the side amassed 3-160 in reply. It was a great victory for the boys and sets the scene for a top-of-the-table clash with Wonthaggi Miners next week. 3rd XI vs Poowong Loch – lost by 8 wickets It was a brave performance from a very inexperienced C grade side as we went down to a well oiled Poowong Loch in a One-Dayer brought on by poor weather in week 1. Featuring an unprecedented 6 under 16 players including debutants Alex Stanley and Dylan Van Puyenbroek, and just 3 men legally allowed to vote, our boys took up the challenge to P/L and continue to show development each week. Winning the toss and electing to bat, skipper Lachie Hughes and young Jake Rockall led the innings and showed great grit and resilience. Batting time and placing value on their wicket, the two were able to occupy the crease for 28 overs and push the score to 58 before Rockall was bowled for a hard-earned 22. Pete Kennedy was next to fall and was soon followed by Hughes who was eventually dismissed for 31. Once again we were not bowled out at the end of our 40 overs and stumps saw us with a total of 5-80 with Stanley undefeated in his first senior innings for 28 and Jed Pearce 0*. It was a tough total to defend, but one that was defended in full vigour as youngsters Lachie O’Connor (1-17 off 6) and Jake Rockall (1-24 off 4) managed to snare a wicket apiece. Despite our best efforts, Poowong Loch were able to get the required runs and pushed the score along to 2-105 when stumps were called. Whilst it was not a victory, it is an effort for which our C’s can hold their heads high as they now look to continue their improvement next week. Good effort lads! Jacko!
