Round 6 Results – Week 1 1st XI vs Kilcunda/Bass at Bass Wet scenes confronted the Cougar Lads as we arrived at the pristine Bass Recreation Reserve for our clash against the top of the table sharks. After loosing the first hour and a half of play, we were pleased to win the toss and shaking out of our idle state, set about posting a competitive score in a now reduced 61 over a side contest. Openers Sammy Hughes and Neville Toms soon knocked out any lethargy as set about pasting the Sharks’ bowlers to all parts of the field. It was a classical Hughes/Toms opening stand of 119, before Neville edged a short one through to the keeper, attempting to launch a hook shot into the carpark. As he departed for an attractive 60, we then launched into a small collapse as the next three batsmen could only contribute 6 runs between them. Josh Moore then joined Hughes at the crease and together the two put on 51 to the close of play. Junior remained on 9 not out, whilst Sammy continued his impressive form to record his second successive ton on the trot, being 104 not out at stumps. Overnight we are 4-196 with a further 8 overs to bat next week before we then have a crack at the opposition. 1st XI vs Glen Alvie at the Leongatha Turf – Round 3 washout game. Won by 7 wickets. Fronting up on Sunday to the Leongatha Turf to make up our round 3 wash out, the Cougar boys were looking a little disengaged and were hoping for an early conclusion. As it turns out we must have been praying to the right gods as despite an early shower of rain, we were able to easily account for the 3rd placed Glen Alvie. Winning the toss and electing to have a crack at the opposition, Jason Kennedy (2-14 off 8) soon vindicated the captain’s decision as he quickly had two wickets under his belt. Opening partner Ben Thomas (2-11 off 8) did likewise and soon the visitors were reeling at 4-13. Things did not improve for them either as favourite son Lachie Sperling, making a cameo appearance from Casey/South Melbourne soon had the ball and bowled impressively to decimate the Glen Alvie middle order. Lachie would soon finish with an impressive 4-2 from his 8 overs with 7 maidens and leave the opposition gutted at just 8-23. Big brother Sam Sperling (1-145 off 8) joined in the fun claiming a victim of his own and when Junior Moore (1-1) snagged his own victim, we were left with a miserly 56 needed for victory. The run chase was a straight forward affair, and allowed some lower-order batsmen valuable time in the middle after having been starved of opportunity of late. Eventually we passed their total 3 down in just 16 overs for a comprehensive victory. 2nd XI vs Kilcunda/Bass at Koonwarra We welcomed cricket back to the magnificent Koonwarra Recreation Reserve and it was a truly spiritual moment for all involved to be at the Mecca. An old friend such as Koony Rec, requires experienced campaigners and it was a veritable Dad’s Army in B grade as for the first time Koonwarra and RSL stalwarts Graham Sperling, Bradley Anderson, Shane Patterson, Shane and Brett Moore combined for the mighty Cougars. The five men share over 1600 games of experience and have a combined age in excess of 240 years – just as well we had some young buck around them to fox the loose balls in the field! With K/B winning the toss and electing to bat, our B’s were looking to make light work of their efforts and on the back of a well-rounded bowling performance, were able to restrict the opposition to a below-par 165 at the home of cricket. Nick Arnup (2-41 off 15) was again the man to get the ball rolling and combining with Paris Buckley (1-16 off 8) soon had the openers back in the sheds. From here however it was the spin twins Bryce Rawson (4-36 off 12) and KT ‘The Love Doctor’ Thorne (2-13 of 4.3) who did the damage. Brycie was particularly damaging, and combining with veteran ‘keeper Bradley Anderson, was able to bamboozle many a batsman. Anderson was able to wind back the clock with 2 crisp stumpings, which is even more impressive when you consider he did them from inside his zimmer frame! Routing the opposition for 165, Nick Arnup and Cal Moscript then fronted up to face out the last 10 overs and carefully guide the side to 0-12 at stumps. No doubt our B boys will be looking to knock off the required runs next week. 3rd XI vs Korumburra at Korumburra Secondary College. Playing in just their second game for the season, our C graders were eager to get out in the field of action and soon made the opposition feel the brunt of their enthusiasm. With many familiar faces in the side, it was nice to welcome Alvis Piksons into the fold for his first game with the Cougars. Also of note was the return of Big Red Jayden Petersafter an extended layoff and both these men would play an important role in our teams fortunes. Winning the toss and electing to bat, our bowlers soon made hard work for the home side, as Benny the kid Perry and Matt Boswell soon had the openers back in the sheds for just 4. From here the Cobras never recovered as all bowlers heaped the pressure upon the batsmen and wickets fell at regular intervals. Comeback kid Jayden Peters was the standout performer snaring a destructive 5-14 off 11 overs. Benny Perry was equally impressive with 3-10 off his 10 overs, whilst Young-buck Peter Kennedy also chimed in for a single. Eventually Korumburra was dismissed for just 88, and the Cougar boys set out to try and knock off as many as they could from the remaining 17 overs. Lenny Gale got off to a flyer before holing out on 22, and nightwatchman Alvis Pikson escaped the duck in his first ever innings, but soon fell for 1. This left opener Michael Green (6 not out) and Matt Boswell (2 not out) to safely negotiate the final overs to stumps with the score at 2-49, still trailing by 39 with a full days play left to bat next week. Well done on a very good weekend’s cricket Cougar Lads. Let’s make sure we finish what we’ve started next week! Cougar!
