Rt Hon Winston Peters New Zealand First Leader 5 June 2013 PM MUST INVESTIGATE ADMITTED SECURITY LEAK Rt Hon Winston Peters has called on the Prime Minister to take leaks from Parliament’s Intelligence and Security Committee seriously before New Zealand’s allies refuse to deal with us on sensitive issues. This follows John Key’s statement in Parliament this afternoon that the committee secretary wrote to its members warning about leaking classified material. Mr Peters says it’s a crime under Section 78 of the Crimes Act to reveal classified security information and as Chairperson of the Committee the Prime Minister has an obligation to mount a full scale criminal investigation. “This situation is now very serious. The Kitteridge report which was leaked would have been covered by this law and so would other matters about the Government Communications Security Bureau leaked last year. “Members of Parliament who serve on this committee with access to classified material are required to act with the utmost discretion and should not be leaking information to newspapers. “During World War Two there was a slogan that ‘loose lips sink ships’ and in New Zealand now loose lips are sinking our international security reputation. ”Mr Key must act immediately to find the source of the leak and ensure the authorities take the appropriate action against the offender,” says Mr Peters.
