Rudaw Reporter who witnessed the Horror on Mount Sinar Tells His Story One doesnt want his children to see those [tragic] scenes. That children starve to death, die from thirst, or an old man die due to lack of medicine. he told Rudaw aftre he and thousand of Yazidis were rescued by Peshmerga troops, but many more are left on the mountain, including his family. Among all my family, I just brought my daughter back with myself. he said with tears in his eyes. On August 7, the impassioned plight of Barakat Issa, a Kurdish reporter from Rudaw station, shocked the Kurdish viewers and the world as he was calling on the world to save, not himself, not even his family, but those children who were left without food, water and milk. An estimated 50,000 Yazidis were trapped on Sinar Mountain. Sinjar, 125 km west of Mosul, home to the religious minority of Yazidis, which came under the effective control of the Iraqi State of Iraq and Syria ISIS on Sunday August 3, led to the mass exodus of more than 200,000 people, 50,000 of them take shelter on rocky and dry Sinjar Mountain. Yazidiss are a heterodox ancient Kurdish religious minority living predominantly in northern Iraq, Syria, and southeast Turkey. They suffered persecution and massacres for hundreds of years. Their numbers range between 700,000 to one million people. According to minorityrights.org, 650,000 of them live in the north of Iraq, surrounding Mosul. In 2007, a series of simultaneous suicide bombs reportedly killed 796 Yazidis and injured thousands more, the deadliest attack ever in Iraq. Al-Qaeda in Iraq was blamed to have carried out the attack. The Iraqi State of Iraq and Syria ISIS or Islamic State has continuously regarded the Yazidis as “devil-worshipers” hence faced with two choices, convert to Islam or face death. But the Muslims are not at peace either. As one displaced Yazidi, who was on the run to the mountains of Sinjar, told Washington Post, “ISIS are savages. We’ve seen what they have done to people of their own faith. Imagine what they would do to us non-Muslims”.
