Rumors of the retirement of one of Hidalgo County’s most recognizable and embattled politicians in the coming days have swept the Rio Grande Valley this week amid an ongoing federal investigation homed on him and others at his office. But privately, the sheriff’s son, J. Chris Treviño, has said his father would announce his retirement by the end of the month, said two people familiar with the situation who declined to be identified because of the sensitivity of the matter.
