Rush and push for Smiths T-shirts as 1,000 people from all over the world place orders in just five days The history of The Smiths goes hand in glove with Salford and it has triggered a rush for a must-have fashion item. The group were famously pictured outside Salford Lads’ Club, and singer, Morrissey, was inspired by the city’s iconic playwright, Shelagh Delaney. But since the M.E.N. revealed that a limited edition T-shirt featuring the band was on sale, the Lads’ Club has been swamped with orders. More than 1,000 people from all over the world have placed orders for the shirt in five days which will bring in £16,000 for the club. The generosity of Stephen Wright, the photographer who took the picture of the group outside the club in Ordsall, is the cause of the windfall. Salford Lads’ Club He has allowed one of his photographs from the 1985 shoot to be reproduced on a Lads’ Club T-shirt raising vital funds. The shirt is dark green, reminiscent of the colour of the Queen Is Dead album – on which the picture was the inner sleeve. Mr Wright is allowing the club to use the image on shirts from November 2014 to November 2015. Initially 80 that were made were sold.
