Rutgers peeps! Come to this tomorrow its going to be great: September 17th, 2014: 11-1 pm RDJC Conference Room Demystifying Academia Graduate Student Workshop Events of this summer—including those in Iraq, Palestine, Ferguson, as well as the unprecedented firing of a tenured Professor, Steven Salaita for his twitter commentary on Gaza--have brought to light the increasingly precarious nature of our rights as academics to speak out and take political stances. The firing of Salaita is a game-changing event that threatens the structure of academic governance, not to mention our capacities as scholar-activists, as critics of the academic industrial complex, and as public intellectuals agitating for social change. The killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson, MO, and the incursion of tanks and use of tear gas on Fergusons Black citizens also reinforce the need for broader forms of public engagement both inside and outside the space of the university. This workshop will address the entwinement of academic freedom and politically-engaged work. What are the consequences of your social media presence? How can you navigate the demands of scholarly writing in conjunction with writing on mainstream, alternative, journalistic, blog and twitter forums? Does the surveillance of social media activity mean that we are always considered to be on the job? How can we evaluate the potential and actual effects of silencing dissent in relation to choosing dissertation and research topics, applying for jobs, and getting tenure? Please join Professor Brittany Cooper, who writes about the political struggles of African Americans for Salon and is a co-founder of the Crunk Feminist Collective, and IRW Mellon Fellow Maya Mikdashi who is a co-founder and co-editor of Jadaliyya, one of the premier alternative web resources for Middle East politics. They will discuss with us the institutional ramifications of feminist and anti-racist intellectual and activist work.
