Ryan Heninger Isn’t it sad how we place bars of expectations on each other? For example as a seminary teacher many people have certain expectations from me or my family. The same could be said of bishops or others in similar callings. For example we’ve all heard too often, “Can you believe the bishop did that”! Or another one, “Can you believe that was the seminary teacher’s kid wearing that!” Why are people so cruel? Here’s the problem with these bars. If you fall short of the bar, people gasp and say, Can you believe what they did or didnt do!?!?!? Pure disappointment and disgust follow. Result? You failed! If you hit the bar….well, honestly who cares!!! I mean after all, that’s what’s expected and you don’t deserve praise or deserve any expressions of appreciation. Result? You feel lonely, unappreciated and unloved! You failed! If you exceed the bar…..well, now you are simply arrogant, self righteous, and holier than thou!!! Result? You failed yet again! So whats the solution?? The only bar that should ever matter to us is the bar that God sets for us. And I know He believes in us and also provides a way for us to reach it. When we jump with everything we have and still come up short, He says, “This is my beloved Son!” (Paraphrase)… Thou your sins kept you from hitting my bar, your sins will now be cleansed through the Atonement of my Son and you will soar as high as my expectations. Result? You win!!! So quite frankly, don’t worry about what others think of you. Only strive to please God. May you soar today through the blessings of the atonement! That is all! Ryan
