S.A is not a little child that, when he has stubbed a toe, one can exaggeratedly smile and nod at, to coax him into believing theres little pain and thereby dodge the barrage of tears that might have ensued. In the same way, future S.A has to learn to accept, respect and delight in differences instead of only really selling itself as doing so. Post Apartheid human issues present need to be recognised to create a truly healthy society. One cannot simply apply an x plus y equals z equation and expect monumental results. With so much diversity in this country and a long history of conditioning s.africans to focus on our differences in a negative way, real progress can only come with greater tolerance, awareness of different realities and the maturity and intelligence to not box yourself and others according to colour of skin. This is EQ - emotional intelligence. In this way equal quality education is imperative for all, for any real progress to occur in this country. Quality education and especially but in no way limited to Arts education. The Arts encourages kids to express themselves which builds self-confidance as it is instilled from an early age that each has a story worthy of being told. Self -confidance allows kids to not only dream but solidly think of achieving their dreams. Furthermore, being proud of ones own identity - an identity that is made even more special as it is part of a greater whole - can lead to interest and respect in the stories of others, no matter how different from your own. Those of us who were priveledged enough to enjoy quality education often times do not even begin to realise the extremely bare boned education that most poorer kids ,even now, recieve- education that is not so much different from the Bantu education system that was being enforced during Apartheid. No libraries or tiny ones stocked with irrelevant, out of date, hand me down books. No arts classes, science sometimes isnt even an option, and extra mural activities often times are not offered. Little or no internet access for kids - which is imperative for progressive development.
