SAINT AT A GLANCE: THE MEMORY OF POPE JOHN PAUL 1 (Prayers and Devotions, Pope John 2) I am the way, the truth, and the life; no one comes to the father but through me. These words help us to direct our memories toward Pope John Paul 1, who was called to the Chair of Peter. We desire once again to meditate on the inscrutable decrees of Divine Providence. You see, after scarcely thirty-three days of pastoral labor in the Roman See, it was given to him to “go to the Father”, by the way which is Christ himself: way, truth, life. So, through Christ, that unusual servant of the servants of God, to whom Christ entrusted his Church, his fold on earth, came to the Father. Christ had entrusted his Church and his fold to him so that the goodness and that pastoral solicitude with which his heart was filled, should be manifested, at least for a short while. The heart of a Good Samaritan, When, during the Council, he, Albino Luciani, preached spiritual exercises to priests, he was accustomed to base them completely on the evangelical parable of the merciful Samaritan. And it was certainly in this spirit that he desired to serve the whole Church. That was his spirit. All those who met Cardinal Albino Luciani and then Pope John Paul 1, could see this, without any mistake. And although his pontifical service lasted so short a time, yet the spirit of the Good Samaritan was manifested once again through him and has remained in the Church. The way of the Good Samaritan orders us to bend to suffering mankind. And as we do this, our heart is raised toward God; love which is directed to man actually always funds its ultimate source in God, who is Love.
