SALUTATIONS TO OUR TEACHERS During one of the many ASUU’s strikes, I engaged myself in a voluntary teaching with a government junior secondary school in my area, tudun wada Kaduna. As far as I’m concern, this is my contribution to my society. During the stint period I spent there, I came to appreciate my teachers the more, the duties of a teacher ranging from lesson planning, lesson note making, lecture delivery, teaching method, class control, motivating & encouraging students, assessment and evaluation are no small tasks, all these makes me pause for a while to pray for my own teachers, All of them. In as much as I appreciate them all, I can’t ignore the fact that there are those among them whom I really hold in high esteem and also those that deem me their favorite. Growing up, I see teachers were almost next to God. We revered them, we feared them, and we were in awe of them, almost. The credit goes to Malam Sabo and Malam Sani for mostly everything I learnt or at least the basic knowledge of Arabic and Islam. The former taught me for nearly 10 years, while the latter took me through the last two years of my stay at the islamiyyah, may Allah reward them. Since 2001, that’s the last time I set my eyes on Mr. Kayode, from his name you can guess right that he is a Yoruba man, extremely fluent in English but he was a math teacher. Tall and handsome, very good at what he does. a disciplinarian and also a motivational speaker I can say. I got his contact number 2yrs ago through a friend of his, we communicated for a while, now I missed the number and missing him too. Malam Abdullahi Bukar was my JSS1 form master, his frequent visit to our class, often counseling and even participating in our weekly class inspection ignited his likeness in me. So also Mr. David, very tough on students, he used to call me his son but that doesn’t makes him spare me when erred, everyone that knows him can testify that Mr. David is a neat person, due to Daura’s weather he bath three times before school closes and change clothes three times too. Both teachers i.e. Bukar & David use to go extra mile out of their way to assist the needy students where necessary. Malam Zayyad came to my notice at the MSS’s programme, he is a man full of righteousness and very upright. Malam S.I Umar was an exceptional teacher and very intelligent. You’ll know of his humility when you are close to him, his patriotism knew no bounds, in fact, he Injected some in me while in his economics class. Adieu S.I. The former Principal of FGC DAURA, Abdullahi Alfa and Mr. Towolawi are very strong men, who stand by their words always, always, always. The former, a hardliner who takes tough decisions for the good of the majority and stick to them. While the latter an indefatigable advocate of proper norms and ethics among students, also a chemistry teacher of the highest order. I recall an exceptional teacher, my English teacher, Mrs. Akpan, she has the passion to impact knowledge to the students and go along with everyone in the class. Most remarkable about her teaching was a rare flare for simply practicing “Big word” usage and correct pronunciation of English words that always sent thrills into the students and earn her applause. She used to call me by my nickname “Confi”, which is strange in a teacher-student rapport. I can’t forget Mrs. Bolaji who mostly uses demonstration in teaching, she aided my learning efforts, and she was my primary 3 class teacher, always helpful even though she crosses disciplinary boundaries. Recently we met, along the line while chatting she instantly offered to assist me in a way that I least expect. Straight away I told her “ma’am, your ability to make other people happy is deeply appreciated” and she smiled, happy me! I don’t have to be parented by teachers to know that the reward of a teacher is in the heavens, even though I am. As I salute our teachers I say Aluta Continua.
