SALVATION ARMY MEETING ON SUNDAY. I was walking around West End - TopicsExpress

SALVATION ARMY MEETING ON SUNDAY. I was walking around West End shopping Centre to the newspaper shop because I saw a new Agatha Christie novel advertised on television. I wanted to get in early because they don’t last very long, especially when an Agatha Christie movie is either coming to the Cinemas or on television. I was lucky to get the particular title of which there was only one volume available. Other older titles were there and they were sold out by the end of next week. Terry Watson saw me go into the news agent and asked me when I came out, what church you go to? No church I said. I want you to check out the Salvation Army meeting he said. I thought you were Christian Outreach I said. I gave that up because I hate Clarke Taylor he said, and the way he rips the people off for money and travels around the world wasting it while the people go hungry. I joined the Salvo’s he said, he got himself baptised into the Salvation Army. I went with him just for the sake of it and the Captain who was the head of the church, was the person who did the preaching. The church hall was dirty and musty, and it needed painting very badly. The mold on the walls was so bad, that you could write in it with your fingers. Lighting was also very bad but being a mission for the poor, they had to live the same way to set an example, because the poor may not even have adequate lighting in their homes. He spoke on all the poor living in their Valley Hostel, men and women since they transferred from Stanley Street, South Brisbane, on the Southbank of the Brisbane River. He spoke about their dining area there as being the world’s biggest soup kitchen since its formation from an old coal cellar in America after the second world war. Our current newspaper/journal is available and you can buy it outside for twenty cents, it will tell you everything that my sermon is about. By the way he said, time has come for our charity collections to start, anybody who wants to go door knocking for us, please let me know before you leave here and you will be given details on where and how you can get the receipts to give out for any donations. I bought the WAR CRY and took the newspaper and my book home after telling him that I want to collect for them and the Captain said to me, you know where I live corner of O’Connell Street and Russell Streets, you can come and see me there anytime tomorrow and if you got magazines like you brought us before, bring them by all meaans, it will be appreciated. Terry hated me for that and commented. You seem to be very popular with everybody, they all know you and you know them. How you do it I don’t know. Perhaps I’m a true Christian unlike you I said to him. You are always two faced and can’t be trusted with anything, especially money bellonging to other people. That’s why I won’t vollunteer to go collecting for them he said, I can’t trust myself to hand it in, because I tend to spend it. I let him go and went home feeling disgusted about him.
