Description The toll of those affected by the Chikungunya fever in the Dominican Republic reached 165,433, according to the most recent report from the Public Health ministry. The toll exceeds the report of the previous week by 28,598 cases while the disease remains active in the Distrito Nacional and 18 out of the 31 provinces. The highest number is reported in southern San Cristobal, where the disease was confirmed last April. Confronting the situation, the Health ministry has reiterated the call for good hygiene and elimination of the sources of transmission, the Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes. Chikungunya fever, the symptoms of which are high fever, headache, joint and muscle pain and rash is a new disease to America, and endemic to Africa and Asia. Routine diagnostic work with clinical specimens can be done safely at Biosafety Level 2, using Biosafety Level 2 practices and procedures. Research work (including co-cultivation, virus replication studies, or manipulations involving concentrated virus) can be done in a BSL-2 (P2) facility, using BSL-3 practices and procedures.
