SANTA BROUGHT US NEW FAMILY MEMBER! Meet Felix, the California Trap Door Spider! Felix was found after a heavy rain, wandering around in a daze. He was put in an aquarium in about 1/2 of dry substrate. He TRIED to make a burrow under one of the objects in the aquarium but of course he failed. Trap door spiders have to have at least 6-8 inches of dirt to burrow in. Without a burrow, they will soon die just like a hermit crab would die if it didnt have a shell to live in. So now Felix has a lovely pickle jar full of substrate packed hard so he can burrow to his hearts content. He even has a starter burrow which is what research on this species recommends. Felix is our first rescued spider. Trap door spiders are a close relative of the tarantula so Felix fits right into the family - except that he can live at room temperature. He is DEFINITELY a mature male spider. Hopefully he makes it after his ordeal. NOTE: No, he cant be released back into his natural habitat because we have abundant spider-killing wasps in our fields and he wouldnt last a day out there.
