SARANDA – FACING THE CLIMATE – 16 SEPTEMBER 2014 This exhibition has toured the region and the world. In Albania, we have displayed it in Tirana, Korca, Shkodra. This year we were very happy to have it being part of our national day celebration in Tirana, fittingly on the world environment day on 5 June. We are very grateful to the mayor and Saranda municipality for the great cooperation with our embassy which has made it possible to bring the exhibition also to Saranda. The first global UN conference on the environment was held in Stockholm in1972. This conference led to an increased global focus on environmental and climate issues. Of course, it has been followed by many more global conferences, such as the one in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. 42 years after the Stockholm conference, there is a growing awareness of the need for all of us to live environment-friendly lives and to make our own climate contributions, big as well as small. Sweden is internationally known as a country that takes environmental issues and sustainability seriously. But taking something seriously doesnt necessarily mean viewing it in a humorless way. Thus, to illustrate Swedens commitment to climate and environment issues, the Swedish Institute launched Facing the Climate in 2010. This exhibition aims to encourage discussion of sustainable development around the world. It aims to take a sharp look at climate issues from the viewpoint of Nordic and Balkan satirical cartoonists who blend satire and humor with a genuine appeal for a better response to environment threats we face. The images are thought-provoking and remind us all of the importance of green living and that climate issues must be prioritized in a global context as the world develops. Today, Swedens engagement in development cooperation in this truly beautiful country of Albania, targeting the nature and environment is well-known and long-established. We are committed to continue this cooperation for several years to come. We want to thank our partners, Saranda municipality, the art gallery and the Swedish Institute for excellent cooperation. Enjoy the exhibition!
