SASCO Stellenbosch on the recent “black face” incident at Stellenbosch University 23 September 2014 SASCO Stellenbosch is concerned about the recent racial attack done by the students of Stellenbosch University. It is evident the perpetrators are testing the independently run SRC and Stellenbosch University’s management, as the perpetrators were clear in writing that “Lets hope they don’t get kicked out the varsity for this one!”. SASCO Stellenbosch condemns the behaviour of these students. The behaviour is not only dehumanising to black people, but it sends out an idea on what kind of an institution Stellenbosch University is and what it claims to be. Furthermore, the behaviour sends out a clear message on how far Stellenbosch University is with inclusivity, diversity and transformation. We remain unshaken by some of the black and white apologists that are defending the perpetrators. As SASCO Stellenbosch we stand firm with the late Vice Chancellor and Rector of Stellenbosch University, Professor Russel Botman’s vision of inclusivity. We will soldier on by critically engaging with the SRC of Stellenbosch University and other structures within the University on the incident and the pace of transformation of the University.
