SAVING EVERY LAST DROP Agriculture is the single largest consumer - TopicsExpress

SAVING EVERY LAST DROP Agriculture is the single largest consumer of fresh water in South Africa. As a major supplier of fresh produce and other agricultural products, we’re actively working to conserve this precious natural resource by drastically reducing the amount of water we consume – in our own operations and those of our suppliers. We’re hoping to ensure that future generations will still be able to enjoy clean, fresh water. FAST FACTS We’re working to understand the water footprint of certain priority products. Our water conservation education programmes involve educating our supply chain and providing valuable water-saving tips to customers and employees. We’re trialing promising water-saving ideas in some new stores including planting water-sparing indigenous shrubs and ground covers, as well as harvesting and storing rain water. At Head Office, we’re tapping into an underground water supply which would otherwise flow into the ocean. This way, we’re saving the Cape Town municipality over 27 million litres of water every year. By removing water-hungry and invasive alien vegetation, through WWF-SA’s Water balance programme,we’re reducing their devastating impact on our water supplies. We’re seeing significant water savings and less chemical run-off through our Farming for the Future initiative. All of our fabric suppliers have to adhere to very strict standards when it comes to dyes, materials and chemicals to ensure they don’t pose a water pollution risk. We’ve completed a trial with 66 food suppliers to highlight issues with run-off water from irrigation practices and waste water from farm processing. We’re working with the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) to identify arable areas in our country that are likely to struggle with water scarcity as a result of climate change
