SBSA Fastpitch League Week 2 Highlights The SBSA Fastpitch League 2013 continued its weekend games held at Kallang Diamond with as many as 16 games being played out. SG RED started Saturday’s games by notching a 13-9 win in a high scoring thriller against PLABOM II. Youth pitcher Jeron Tan (14 years old) pitched well for a complete game. PLABOM II bounced back from their loss in their final round robin game with a 4 -2 win against ORA II in a close encounter. ORA II lost their first of four games during this long weekend; but they followed the example of their opponents, to bounce back with a 11-9 win over NUS in another exciting neck to neck game. The game was tied at 8-8 going into the 6th inning before Seah Chee Kiong came through with a clutch single through infield for ORA II to take the lead. AZTIGS played off a double-header game on Saturday morning as well, unfortunately against a solid SRC RED SOX lineup which fielded a great pitcher in Marcus Chew and complemented with their sharp offensive strokes. The game ended 8-2 in favour of SRC RED SOX. In the following game, ROADRUNNERS ran over AZTIGS in four innings (14-4) as the young team’s combination of compact batting and speed around the bases proved too difficult for AZTIGS to handle. ORA fielded their guest pitcher Neal Delpero, Australia ace pitcher, for their games this weekend. His 115km/h pitches thrown with such ease seemed to outpace the opponents. ORA continued their stronghold with their hot batting form when Ivan Ng blasted a two-run homerun over the fence to stretch the game apart against SRC RED SOX; before Andreu Han took one of his own with a moon shot over left-field. The game ended 7-0 in favor of ORA. ORA’s back-to-back game was played against ROADRUNNERS who had SEA Games pitcher Gerann Ngiam on the mound. He pitched well but eventually picked up a 4-1 loss. Saturday also saw two women’s league games being played with SPARTANS taking their first victory against NUS in a 12-6 finale. 2012 runners-up SRC PELICANS also began their route to the finals with a 9-1 demolition of FRENZ that lasted only 5 innings. Sunday promised to be another exciting day of softball. The overnight rain was kind enough to leave our field in a better condition than before. SG RED fully displayed their playing abilities, after their exponential growth from the experience gained over the past week of softball. They snatched a one-sided win over ORA II with a score of 12-0. Over on the other field, two evenly matched teams faced off with the likes of OBOYZ and SRC HUNTERS. The latter raced off to a 3-1 lead early on through their offensive prowess. However, OBOYZ showed that they were no pushovers, holding their opponents down with a notable running catch from Right-Fielder Jerald Lim. OBOYZ came back chasing but only a little too late to see the game end 5-3 to the SRC HUNTERS. In the following match OBOYZ continued their batting form to win ORA II with a score of 13-0, highlighted with a long ball from Lee Wei Ming Leonard that just cleared the right field fence. The ROADRUNNERS claimed a convincing victory in a youthful matchup against SG WHITE, capping the win at 7-0. This was before SG WHITE decided to outdo themselves and take their next match against the AZTIGS by a score of 7-5. Sunday’s highlights did not just end there, as the game between SRC RED SOX and NEXUS drew a crowd of avid softball fans. NEXUS got on the scoreboard early on with a walk, followed by an error before a hit sent the run in. but the score line stayed that way till the 7th. The SRC RED SOX put up a good fight against the opponent’s ace pitcher – Tane William Richardson from New Zealand, who continued to hurl in the strikes at average speeds of 113km/h. The batters trained hard throughout the week to adapt to such a throwing speed and got some hits along the way but never managed to bring the run home. SBSA President Jeffeury Tan, playing for the RED SOX, got a clean hit only to be snagged by the NEXUS first basemen. The last match of the day featured a showdown between two ace pitchers – ORA’s Neal (Australia) and NEXUS’ Tane (New Zealand), both of whom had played in previous ISF World Series’ Softball Championships. It was truly a pitchers’ matchup as both teams’ batters were unable to make any good contacts on the pitches. In fact, the first hit of the day came from the pitcher Neal, but he ended up being stranded on 1B. Both pitchers were already paving their way to pick up the Best Pitcher award with all the strike-outs that they have accumulated over the past games. Both teams only decided to make substitutions for their pitchers in the 6th inning and that was when the hitting really started, and the game finally showing some batting action. ORA rode on their momentum and piled up the runs quickly to end their day with a 14-1 victory over NEXUS. The 2nd weekend of softball has ended and most of the Men’s games have ended. The Women’s League would take place over the next 2 weekends before we hit the playoffs on the Aug 3rd and 4th weekend! Hope to see you at Kallang Diamond (nearest MRT – Stadium MRT).
