SC/STs, academics and Womens Day Once upon a time there was a college. They decide to celebrate Women’s Day and invited some guests. I happen to be one of the speakers. A retired professor is another. We begin chatting while the third speaker rises to speak. After pleasantries, we begin an academic discussion on a serious subject. She said the classification of the Indian society was justified (she refuses to use the term hierarchy) ``Providence has ordained us to do different tasks. No one can do everything. You see, and each type of job calls for specific skill sets,’’ she said. `Family training in various vocations was an essential part of bringing up children’ she added. By disrupting this, we have damaged India’s economy. You see there are no farm labourers now days. There are no blacksmiths, or carpenters or potters in villages now. All the traditional handicrafts have been destroyed. Where are we heading?, she wondered. She felt pained at the fact that a lot of radical Dalit activists were doing nothing other than opposing intellectuals like Arun Shourie, Ramachandra Guha and Arundhati Roy. It was then that I made this profound statement about how SC/STs should have stayed home and how they had become aimless after joining Universities and learning English. And the subject we were talking about is called `Education’.
