SCAM ALERT: North Wales Police are advising residents to be wary following a small number of reports of e mails having been received purporting to be from ‘United Kingdom Police’. The e mails received varies, in that, some e mails have a particular police force crest displayed, others just state they are from ‘United Kingdom Police’. The e mail claims that the resident has downloaded copyrighted material and they ask for a payment of £100 by Ukash vouchers, from which the code could be entered online, or via money transfer through Western Union. The e mails claim they would unblock the computer screen after being paid. Because the recipients had antivirus software installed, the computer had detected the infected files straight away. North Wales Police would like to advise residents that they would never contact a member of the public in this way, asking for payment. They advise if people receive such an e mail that they contact the North Wales Police ‘Ecrime Unit’ by dialing 101.
