SCAVENGER OF ART(the Uptown Edition of SOALIfe) I am Leopold, an Art Aficionado(curator and art dealer) and I am an Uptown native. Home is where the Art is... Washington Heights and Inwood, means many things to a lot of different people...To me, this is the land of my childhood, family, most of my firsts have taken place in these hoods, but its also the place to escape from when I want to be visually inspired. These are hoods with no galleries, art museums or even an abundance of street art...and because its what I like I end up spending more time outside of home base. There have been times, like now, where I come across some visual gems thatll keep me uptown. Whether you are from Uptown or not, show your appreciation for that ok so we dont have any galleries uptown but well make the best of it anyways attitude and check out the arts that Uptown has to offer. M.Tony Peralta exhibit at Darling Coffee. Peraltas a native son of Uptown who has boldly loved his hood and that culture it embodies, before anyone else like no one else. Then you have Jose Morales, another native son of everything North of Harlem, who cares for his community like few have or do, that he much rather lose out by describing his business, Apt78 as a gallery/ lounge than a hookah bar, as most of the community has. Always putting his best foot forward to blaze a new path in the arts for a gallery deficient community. Apt78 is currently play host to an indoor mural by artistic duo known as URNEWYORK. Finally check out the BP Gas Gallery, or at least thats what I prefer to call it. Its the BP Gas station in Isham between Sherman and 10th ave., where you want to find yourself is behind the gas station on Isham street, where you will find an outdoor wall of street art. This wall host a group of different street/graffiti artist but even more interesting is that every couple of week that wall host new art from different combination of artists... There you have it 3 reasons to save on a metro card swipe and stay close to home while enjoying some great art...not local art but great art.
