SCFBC, in partnership with St. Clair Superior Development Corporation, is honored to have been selected as 1 of 3 finalists for the Enterprise Community Partners Community Innovation Award for our Urban Grazing program! Please join us next week for our presentation! We also congratulate all the finalists including: Slavic Village Development and the Hispanic Business Center! Please see information below: Enterprise is excited to invite you to our 2nd annual Leadership in Community Innovation Award Forum on Thursday, November 12 from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at CSU, when the three finalists (listed below) will present their ideas and the $25,000 winner will be determined in real time by a panel of expert judges. The program will focus on the work of this year’s Leadership in Community Innovation Award finalists, who have created groundbreaking plans to develop a more equitable and sustainable Greater Cleveland. Enterprise and our sponsors will also present the $10,000 Nurture an Idea Award to innovative nonprofits working to improve low-income Cleveland communities, and a $10,000 cash award to the winner of our fundraising CrowdRise Challenge. The brand-new Nurture an Idea Award provides funding and expertise for an innovative community development concept that would otherwise not get off the ground due to a lack of resources. The CrowdRise Challenge, also in its first year, is an online fundraising contest in which the nonprofit that raises the most money during the Challenge will receive the award. The event will also be the venue at which the Cleveland Neighborhood Progress - Neighborhood Solutions Awards winners will be announced. The Neighborhood Solutions Award(s) will provide grant dollars for project support or staff capacity in the focus areas of Placemaking, CDC services, and Economic Opportunity. Please register online or call 216.523.7330 to RSVP. The three finalists for the Leadership in Community Innovation Award are: The Neighbors Invest in Broadway program, submitted by Slavic Village Development The Neighbors Invest in Broadway program seeks to revitalize the Slavic Village neighborhood by making vacant and foreclosed homes available at low-cost to buyers who agree to bring the blighted buildings back up to code. Slavic Village purchases the vacant homes and then provides repair estimates, financing and other arrangements necessary in order for prospective homeowners to purchase and repair the houses themselves or to buy them from a third party that performs the necessary work. At the heart of this program is the utilization of sweat equity to make affordable homeownership possible. Urban Grazing, submitted by St. Clair Superior Development Corporation and Stockyard, Clark-Fulton & Brooklyn Centre Community Development The Urban Grazing program makes economical use of goats and sheep to prevent overgrowth in vacant lots, which can reduce property values in surrounding neighborhoods. This approach is less expensive than hiring professional landscaping services and generates excitement in the community, drawing visitors. Urban Grazing will also focus on ways to raise recurring revenue from wool, fertilizer, and milk products sourced from the livestock. Small Business Fundamentals, submitted by the Hispanic Business Center The Hispanic Business Center created the Small Business Fundamentals program in response to a lack of resources readily available for small business entrepreneurs. The program provides classroom training, one-on-one business coaching, customized curriculum and learning materials for current and prospective small business owners, providing them with the tools they will need in order for their businesses to achieve sustained success. In addition to developing its own training curriculum, HBC has formed strategic partnerships to provide access to capital.
