SECTION 5 Football/Geneva@Batavia Batavia 8 Geneva 7 Blue Devils hold off Geneva late in the game and come out on top The Batavia Blue Devils were able to overcome some 3rd quarter adversity and put up just enough points to walk away winners over a very good Geneva football team. Geneva was first to put some numbers up on the scoreboard. With 7 minutes remaining in the third quarter, Marquan Ross intercepted a Greg Mruczek pass close to the end zone. On the very next play, Mark Suchewski ran the ball in for a 90 yard touchdown. Genevas extra point was good and they held a 7-0 lead until the 4th quarter. With 3:03 left in the third, Geneva was driving to the end zone when Mark Suchewski fumbled the ball. Dominick Mogavero pounced on the ball before it went out of bounds and it was Blue Devils ball. With 7:49 left in the 4th quarter, Batavia quarterback Greg Mruczek called his own number and ran the ball in diving over the goal line to make the score 6-7. The Blue Devils then went for two points. Dominick Mogavero made the two point conversion and Batavia held a 8-7 lead. Coach Brennan Briggs then instructed his team to run down the clock. Batavia was able to get several first downs and Geneva was left with under a minute when they took over on 4th down in their own zone. At the buzzer, Geneva quarterback Alex Joll went for the Hail Mary pass right at the buzzer. James Cryer was able to bat the pass down and the Blue Devils hung on to win 8-7. The team is now 4-1 and will play Wayland- Cohocton next Friday at home. Geneva is now 3-2 on the year. According to Coach Briggs, this is the first time in 15 years a Batavia Blue Devil football team has gone 4-1. Briggs says this game was an important one for the team but also the program. Mogavero had 23 carries for 110 yards and a 2 point conversion for the lead. Mruczek was 6/19 for 60 yards and had13 carries for 70 yards with one TD. Danny Williams had 10 tackles.
