SEIU 721 members have been speaking out and we are finally being heard. This week the news outlets have supported the reforms LA County Social Workers have long been calling for. Our colleague and Executive Board Treasurer David Green has been speaking with media outlets on the Gabriel Fernandez case and the problems we face as social workers in the Department of Children and Family Services. After an editorial in the LA Times, published on Monday (latimes/news/opinion/editorials/la-ed-gabriel-fernandez-child-welfare-20130604,0,5841634.story), which echoed the Op-Ed we wrote in March (latimes/news/opinion/opinion-la/la-ol-dcfs-child-deaths-abuse-blowback-20130301,0,4729754.story) in March, David sent in a letter to the editor which was published today: latimes/news/opinion/letters/la-le-0606-thursday-gabriel-fernandez-20130606,0,82537.story KCAL CBS also interviewed David, as well as DCFS Director Philip Browning, regarding the case and the systemic issues social workers face daily when making decisions on how to do their jobs: losangeles.cbslocal/2013/06/05/dcfs-director-says-social-workers-overextended-while-looking-into-palmdale-boys-case/ In addition, the LA Times printed a correction from the May 31st article written by Garrett Therolf: latimes/news/custom/corrections/la-a4-0606-correx-20130606,0,3696393.story With the news media outlets reporting favorably on social workers, we have an opportunity to act and be seen, to speak and be heard. What will we do and what will we say? The children of LA County are counting on us; LA County needs to hire 1400 new social workers. Everyday that passes without this happening is unacceptable.
