SELF-STUDY There has been a widespread public debate over the advantages and disadvantages of self-study. Personally, I am convinced that self-study has both benefits and drawbacks. This essay will grant us a chance to discuss both views of the issue in more detail. On the bright side, first and foremost, it is easy for learners to find essential silence to get high concentration. In fact, this study approach prevents learners from being disturbed by useless gossips which sometimes occur in group study. To be specific, a person who studies independently does not have any chances to discuss the next performance or current films shown on the internet. Furthermore, self - leaners gives the impression of being independent. It is self-study that increases opportunities for students to solve their problems independently. They may make decisions on their favorite reference materials to read or arrange their own timetables, which are supposed to suit their abilities best. To put it another way, independent learning, more or less, motivates them to think out the box and find out their own ways to achieve their goals. On the dark side, self – learning students might be short of ideas to cope with big assignments. In fact, everyone has a limited ability of imagination and critical thinking. Accordingly, no matter how innovative their mind is, self-learners will certainly need coordination with the others, at least in terms of ideas. Moreover, those who study alone usually find it hard to master presentation skills, without group support. As a matter of fact, people need to talk to improve certain communication skills, particular language skills. However, due to the lack of frequent group discussions, as a general rule, self-learners often sit silently to think about their problems, trying to figure out certain measures to tackle these problems non-verbally. Their verbal skills, thus, cannot develop properly. As an odd saying goes, “every coin has two sides”. In other words, learners should be wise enough to decide when and how to alternate between group study and self-study in order to take the best advantages. By Lê Hoàng Vĩnh Thụy
