SELF are so pleased to announce that Police Sergeant Paul Jennings from Hampshire Constabulary and operational lead for Serenity will be talking at our Introday, Paul will be discussing how Operation Serenity is proving crucial in the community by working together with services to improve responses to mental health crisis calls, where vulnerable people may need specialist support or there are concerns for their safety. Police officers and mental health practitioners respond to calls together, to provide the best possible response to people in crisis and, with an improved initial diagnosis, reduce the time spent dealing with such incidents. Sergeant Jennings is as passionate as we are about making changes in the way police deal with individuals who have mental health problems, raising awareness of the need for specialised treatment, reducing section 136s, and unnecessary time in cells for vulnerable and mentally unwell individuals. Paul had an Interesting conversation with a service user with psychosis who said that his illness is aggravated when he sees a police officer or police vehicle - heightened anxiety and belief that the police were pursuing him. Potential here to assist him and others by providing a police liaison officer who would deal with any police contact, thereby eliminating the anxiety caused by seeing the police in public places. Hampshire Constabulary are launching the MILO scheme in 2014 (Mental Health Liaison Officer) so we will see if this idea can be incorporated into the MILO role. We love the work Paul is doing and are really looking forward to hearing much more about Serenity at the SELF introday x
