SELFLESS SERVICE. Sunday, August 31 “Then Daniel answered and said before the king, Let thy gifts be to thyself, and give thy rewards to another; yet I will read the writing unto the king, and make known to him the interpretation.” Daniel 5:17 Yesterday we encouraged ourselves on the need to go for the excellent spirit, keeping in mind that once this is done we will always be in demand by the high and the mighty. The additional thought we want to add today is that when duty calls, there should be a greater motivation to serve than the lure of money. We return again to Daniel to illustrate what we mean. As we noted in our previous meditation, King Belshazzar saw a vision that troubled him because it defied interpretation by his magicians. When he heard of the ability of God in Daniel, he sent for him. He offered Daniel financial inducement to do the job. The text of Scripture we quoted today was Daniel’s response. Daniel was willing to do service without strings attached. This is what we can call selfless service. This was quite in contrast to Balaam who was set on harming the people of God for monetary gain. Those who always think of service in the context of what to gain will not only forfeit the joy in serving, but they may actually endanger themselves as the case of Balaam proved. People who serve without consideration for self are the ones in greater service. Ironically, God will never let such people go unrewarded; He becomes their exceedingly great reward. When last did you render service without asking, “What’s in this for me?” FURTHER STUDY: DANIEL 6:10-23 PRAYER: Lord, teach me to serve without selfish motive.
