SEMC organizes a hearing session between citizens and local authority on priorities of youth and women Sanaa, December 23 – Earlier today in Sanaa, SEMC (Studies and Economic Media Center) organized a hearing session on the Priorities and Needs of Youth and Women in Maeen district, within Voices of Youth and Women project that is implemented in cooperation with the EU commission in Yemen. Mr. Mustafa Nasr, Chairman of SEMC, clarified that this hearing session, attended by media and civil society representatives, aims to gather leadership of local authority with youth and women representatives, so that needs and priorities of youth and women are presented, and an agreement is reached on how to adopt these needs and merge them into developmental plans. He also pointed out that this session includes presenting policy papers on the role of local authority in encouraging youth participation in their local communities, and issues like dropping of education level on its institutions, corruption in services and spread of unemployment, clarifying that along working with the local council of Maeens district, there were many mistakes and negative practices. Mr. Yahya Al-Shahithi, Secretary-General of Maeens district local council, clarified that the districts poverty level reached 70%, while Maeen is one of the biggest districts in the capital with 400 thousand people. He emphasized that districts resources drained significantly by recent crises, which mainly took place at the district itself, although its resources equal these of 5 poor governorates.
